The Great Allegheny Passage

This weekend I headed down to Ohiopyle State Park to enjoy the great weather. While I was down there, I explored about 10 miles of The Great Allegheny Passage. This 135 mile trail connects Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland. From Cumberland, you can connect to the C&O Canal Towpath and head all the way to Washington, DC. After this weekend's visit, I'm inspired to do the whole thing. I figure if this self-proclaimed wonk can do it, so can I.

Of course, we're still waiting for the trail to be finished. There's a one-mile section in Pittsburgh that is waiting on an agreement with the owners of Sandcastle. I can't wait for the day when I can ride from my house to Washington, DC on a bike. Of course, since negotiations with Sandcastle have been on-going since the 90s, it may be my grandchildren that complete the ride.

Ha. I was actually trying to write up a trip report for that ride over the weekend and the title I put was the "If we can do it so can you" ride.

I have been barking about the completion of this for awhile myself. What good is the South Side-Munhall trail if it just ends a cul-de-sac near the Glenwood Bridge? Same goes with the Duck Hollow Trail.

One can see a big scheme of all these trails coming together and be absolutely glorious, but right now there are so many disparate pieces like a puzzle that it seems like there's less progress than there actually is.

Just imagining traveling from Downtown all the way to places like Millvale, Etna, Sharpsburg, Aspinwall, Lawrenceville, Homestead, McKeesport, and even Point Breeze via Frick Park/Nine Mile run all by trail alone is a wonderful thought

Dude I think this stuff is really interesting, and I read your post, but I couldn't watch the video... I think you didn't upload it in a good way.
